Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Announced
The Initiative requires that as of January 1, 2008, all US, Canadian and Mexican citizens as well as citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda must have a passport or other secure document to enter or reenter the US.
Currently, US citizens and citizens of certain other countries in the Western Hemisphere are not required to present a passport to enter or reenter the US when traveling within the Western Hemisphere.
The Departments are issuing a notice on the plan and are requesting input/comments on the suggested documents and possible alternative documents that can satisfy the statutory requirements. A more formal rulemaking will be issued later this year.
